A growing number of New Zealanders are enjoying taking a punt on a huge variety of sports.  TAB sports betting, which began in 1996, now covers 31 sports, from darts to rugby.

This month’s Football World Cup, the Commonwealth Games later this year, and the Rugby World Cup next year, is expected to further boost sports betting turnover.

TAB has recorded a multimillion dollar rise in turnover in the first half of the financial year.

This increase of 3.5% is in part due to the larger number of sports being offered, and more sports being shown on the television.

There is also a rise in the number of Kiwis gambling, and some welfare agencies are reporting that during a recession many people turn to gambling activities, mainly racing, pokies, sports betting and internet gambling.  They say that this results in more people needing help with gambling problems.

However, the wagering general manager of TAB says that gambling is not recession proof, and that is why they have been constantly looking at ways to increase their revenue.  As a result TAB have increased their racing products and have launched a new television channel to “cushion the effects of the recession”.
