New Zealand racing clubs and gambling

The reputation of some of New Zealand’s racing clubs has been somewhat tarnished of late, with only 16% on New Zealanders having a positive impression of racing and wagering.

The concerns mainly surround how some clubs have used the revenue raised from pokie and gaming machines.

Clubs are being asked to have an independent audit of their accounts by December 1 this year.  This will determine whether they will retain their betting license for the 2011-2012 season. This move will hopefully dispel some of the concerns surrounding the racing industry in New Zealand.

The Racing Board chairman, Michael Stiassny said that is it important that Kiwis have confidence in racing’s integrity.  Hopefully, racing clubs will take this opportunity to deal with issues that have dented the reputation of the industry.

The racing industry must make sure that they are beyond reproach and able to withstand close scrutiny.  Meanwhile it remains easy and safe to use the internet for sports betting and online gambling in New Zealand.
