Pokies for the Christchurch racing club?

The Christchurch racing club has made an attempt to bring 18 pokie machines to the club’s Addington raceway.

The number of gambling machines allowed is strictly regulated.  The addition of the 18 gaming machines is to be achieved by a “strong supporter” giving up their commercial venue license, and allowing the pokies to relocated to the raceway.

The bid has been met with some opposition in the council and the club will still need an exemption, granted by the Christchurch Council’s gambling policy, in order to move the machines.

The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has said that it needs the gaming machines in order to protect jobs and up to $143 million in economic wealth in the area.

The club chairman, David Rankin, said it would be keeping to the policy of no increase in the number of machines in Christchurch, as they would just be transferring them from one venue to another.

However, Councillor Sue Wells has said that their sinking lid gambling policy aimed to cut the number of pokies in the area and that if one venue closed, pokies could not simply be transferred to another site.

The club hope that the pokies at Addington would provide income that could be used to upgrade the facilities.

The club’s application is expected to be voted on by the council later this week.

Meanwhile, it remains easy for people who enjoy gambling in New Zealand to use the many overseas online casinos to play online poker as well as a variety of other games.
