As part of SkyCity’s $30 million Auckland development plans they are opening a new Diamond Room which will include up to 250 poker machines.  This facility will primarily target international visitors.

The first part of the development will open in July, with extra gambling space, restaurant and bars following on in time for the Rugby World Cup.

Under previous governments there has been little appetite for the expansion of any gambling facilities.  However, there now seems to be a more enlightened attitude, particularly towards attracting overseas players.

At present most of the overseas players come in from Asia, arriving and spending around 4 or 5 days whilst adding an average of $17,000 to the New Zealand economy.

The home market remains challenging, although there are signs that this may be easing, and there are great hopes that the Rugby World Cup will attract large numbers of punters to New Zealand casinos.

Land based casinos have struggled in recent years due, in the main, to the ever increasing popularity of online casinos, and the easy availability of gambling on the internet.  This is a worldwide phenomenon, and New Zealanders are no exception, enjoying the many and varied opportunities the internet presents.
